Emerald is medium to medium dark, green to slightly bluish green beryl. Most emeralds have at least some eye-visible inclusions and have been enhanced by a standard practice of soaking in a colorless oil. The green color comes from chromium or in some cases vanadium. With hardness 7.5 - 8 emeralds are potentially durable gems, but their actual toughness will depend on the number and nature of their inclusions. They should not be cleaned with steam or ultrasonics. Colombia is the source of the finest colored emeralds.
